Meditation for beginners
Everything you need to know to start meditating today
You don’t need to be good at it
The most common misconception about meditation is that you need to “clear your mind.” You don’t. Meditation isn’t about having no thoughts. It’s about changing your relationship with them.
If you can breathe, you can meditate. That’s really all it takes to begin.
Start with just 5 minutes
You don’t need to meditate for an hour. In fact, consistency matters far more than duration. Five minutes every day will do more for you than an hour once a month.
Here’s a simple way to start:
- Sit comfortably. A chair, cushion, or your bed — anywhere works. You don’t need to sit cross-legged.
- Close your eyes and take three slow, deep breaths.
- Breathe naturally and focus your attention on the feeling of air entering and leaving your body.
- When your mind wanders (and it will, every time), simply notice it and gently return to your breath.
- That’s it. The moment you notice your mind has wandered and bring it back — that is meditation.
Common beginner concerns
”I can’t stop thinking”
You’re not supposed to. Thoughts are natural. The practice is noticing them without following them. Every time you catch yourself thinking and return to your breath, you’re building the skill.
”I don’t have time”
You have 5 minutes. Meditation can happen on a bus, in a waiting room, or before bed. It doesn’t require a special place or time.
”I’m not sure I’m doing it right”
If you sat down, closed your eyes, and tried to focus on your breath, you did it right. There’s no wrong way to meditate as a beginner.
”I fell asleep”
That’s fine. It means you needed rest. Over time, you’ll learn to stay alert while remaining relaxed.
What to expect in your first week
Days 1-2: It might feel strange or pointless. Your mind will wander constantly. This is completely normal.
Days 3-5: You’ll start to notice small moments of calm between thoughts. You might feel a bit more relaxed after sessions.
Days 6-7: The habit starts to feel more natural. You may notice yourself being slightly more aware of your thoughts during the day.
Building a daily habit
The key to making meditation stick:
- Same time, same place. Attach it to an existing habit like waking up or going to bed.
- Start small. 5 minutes is enough. You can always add more later.
- Don’t judge yourself. Some sessions will feel great, others won’t. Both are valuable.
- Use guided meditations. A voice guiding you makes it much easier, especially at the start.
